Curate a restful and luxurious sleep experience so you can perform at the highest level in all of your endeavors. BED LINENS 101: A QUICK GUIDE FOR UPGRADING YOUR SHEETS WHAT KIND OF FABRIC IS BEST? Choosing the right type of fabric for your bed linens is a personal choice – there is such thing as the definitive ‘right choice’ (although there are some ‘wrong choices’, more on that later). If you’re new to the world of bedroom textiles, we recommend selecting sheets woven from high-quality cotton. Cotton is a versatile natural fiber, prized for its breathability. Notice that we specified high quality cotton: cotton is available in a range of qualities, both superb and dismal. The rule of thumb for cotton used to be that Egyptian cotton was the best. Due to widespread fraud over the last decade, this is no longer the case. We recommend you look for long or extra-long staple cotton, as this is an objective way to measure cotton quality. A long fiber length allows the cotton to be spun into a soft, supple, fine thread for weaving exquisite textiles. You can also explore silk, linen, wool, modal, and more. We recommend steering clear of Bamboo sheets (rayon with better PR) and polyester. These synthetic fibers lack the breathability and quality of natural fibers. THREAD COUNT Thread Count is often thought of as the definitive way to gauge the quality of bed linens. In reality, the staple length is the best gauge of quality. We have seen inexpensive 900 thread count fabrics that, upon closer inspection, were woven from tightly spun short staple cotton. The ending result was stiff, uncomfortable fabric that degraded quickly with use. On the flip side, you can have beautiful textiles that rank at 200-300 thread count, as long as they are woven from long or extra-long staple cottons. Bed linens made from these fabrics will retain their softness and durability over years’ of use. SATEEN OR PERCALE The two most common options are sateen and percale. Both are woven from cotton, so how to choose? SATEEN Sateen is woven to be exceptionally soft and drape close to the skin, which warms you more quickly. CHOOSE SATEEN IF: You want an almost silky feel to your sheets You sleep cold and want your bedding to be as warming as possible Left: Flora Giza 45, Right: Capri Duo 90 Colours PERCALE Percale has a cool, crisp feel. Because of its weave, it is also a bit more durable than sateens and may be ideal for those with pets. CHOOSE PERCALE IF: You want a crisp 5-Star Hotel experience every night You sleep warm and want your bedding to feel cool You have pets – percale is a tighter, more durable weave that will hold up better to repeat launderings or little paws Left: Nico Organic Percale, Right: Hotel Roma Percale ENHANCE YOUR SLEEP BY INVESTING IN A LUXURY SLEEP EXPERIENCE IT BEGINS WITH BESPOKE BED LINENS, HAND-CRAFTED IN BRITISH COLUMBIA FROM THE WORLD’S FINEST TEXTILES. Our products are proudly manufactured in British Columbia, Canada QUALITY AND SUSTAINABILITY GUIDING PRINCIPLE NO. FIVE DESIGN AND PRODUCE SUSTAINABLY At St Genève we create high quality bed linens and down products crafted from sustainably sourced natural fibres that are designed to last generations. Our products are proudly manufactured in British Columbia, Canada view our guiding principles MADE WITH NATURAL FIBERS We prioritize the use of natural fibers sourced from European mills with strong commitments to environmentally sustainable practices. We love natural fibres for their unmatched beauty and breathability. Unlike their synthetic counterparts, which are derived from crude oil, natural fibres are completely biodegradable. We source our textiles from European mills with high environmental and ethical production standards. These mills incorporate materials certified by third-party organizations such as the Global Organic Textile Standard, Institute for Ethical and Environmental Certification, and the Wool Integrity™ Programme. We proudly offer product ranges made from certified organic cotton, linen, silk, as well as new innovative sustainable fibres like lyocell and modal. made with nautral fibres QUALITY WE STAND BEHIND With proper care, down products have the potential to last for generations, and are completely biodegradable at the end of their lifecycle. Unlike synthetic fills, which wear out after 3-5 years, down can last for decades. We have encountered duvets older than 150 years, with down still in good condition. When the ticking (outer covering) wears out, we can clean and restore the down and place it in a new covering. We so thoroughly believe in the longevity of our product that we guarantee the quality for up to 20 years. MADE TO ORDER IN CANADA We take the guess work out of determining where your bed linens and down products are manufactured; St Genève bed linens are made in-house at our Canadian atelier. Our linens and down products are made to order at our manufacturing facility and headquarters in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. Our women-led production team is made up of a diverse group of talented sewists and down experts. Our products are made to order to suit the needs of our stockists and special order clients while reducing the risk of overproduction. BENEFITS OF DOWN A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP Extraordinarily soft, lightweight and warm, down is an incredible insulator that will keep you comfortable throughout all seasons. High quality certified down is hypoallergenicc. BREATHABILITY Down is superior in its natural ability to breathe. By allowing water vapour to pass through without releasing warmth, down will keep you dry and at an optimal temperature no matter which season. LIGHTWEIGHT INSULATION The tiny filaments that make up each down cluster interlock to trap pockets of air, keeping the cold out and warmth in. Down is nature's most effective insulator. RESILIENCE Down is both compressible and resilient. It will conform to your body while you are sleeping and spring back to its original, fluffy shape during the day. No other material regains its “loft” like down. LONGEVITY With proper care, St Genève down products will outlast any other insulating materials. Here at St Genève we have recovered duvets up to 150 years old, with the filling still in excellent condition. QUALITY All of these wonderful things about down are far more noticeable in high quality down vs lower quality down. Always purchase the best quality down within your price range. ELEMENTS OF A DOWN BED DUVET Your duvet is the heart of a deep and restful sleep. Get the best duvet you can afford, as the finer the quality the more light and comfortable your duvet will be. Ensure that you choose the appropriate size for your bed, because if it is too large your duvet will drag on the floor. Sleeping on a down top feather mattress topper feels like sleeping on a cloud. The down filled layer is soft and luxurious to the touch. The bottom layer is filled with feather and/or down, which provides an extra layer of comfort while giving you subtle support. TOPPER SLEEPING PILLOWS High quality pillows are a dream to sleep on. They gently form their shape to you and will stay soft and puffy for years. Grand Queen or Grand King pillows behind your sleeping pillows make a great visual statement and are comfortable when sitting up. We recommend a 20/80 or 50/50 down and feather fill. I've pulled inspiration from the varied landscapes of the season: from the fallen leaves of Nova Scotia to the autumn sunsets of Tofino; from the tundras of the Yukon to the midnight skies of the prairies and, of course, to the magical light show of the Aurora Borealis.
